“A pure heart is one that reflects God’s clear memory—free from images and impressions—and is ready to receive His feelings, making it light.”
— St. Marcus Eremita
In the Catholic tradition, particularly through the lens of St. Thomas Aquinas, the intellect and the will live in the soul—our capacities to know truth and to choose the good. Purity of heart—or rather, the heart as Scripture often speaks of it—is one way of understanding the soul. It is in the soul that we are rightly ordered to God. When the imagination is flooded with disordered or impure images, the intellect becomes darkened and cannot perceive reality clearly. The will, likewise, becomes weakened, more easily influenced by lower desires rather than directed toward the highest good.
Aquinas reminds us that the soul was created for union with God, who is Truth and Goodness itself. When we allow impure images or thoughts to dwell in the imagination, they disturb the harmony of the soul’s faculties and cloud its orientation toward God. Purity, then, is not merely a matter of external behavior—it is the interior discipline of protecting the soul so that both intellect and will remain free, clear, and capable of loving God above all things.
